Pipe-Major John Grant
Medallist of the Highland Society of London

For the information of a correspondent, the following particulars of the career of the above medallist of the Highland Society of London are given and will no doubt be of widespread interest:–

Pipe-Major Grant received his training in the 3rd V. B. Seaforth Highlanders from the late Pipe-Major Ronald McKenzie, piper to His Grace the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, and won the championship gold medal in 1899, open to a band of 32 pipers. In course of his life-long devotion to pipe music he spent many years studying its theory and made special research in piobaireachd. His compositions in this classical music of the pipes have been accepted by H. M. the King, the late King Edward, and many noblemen and gentlemen.

During the War he was Instructor of Piping, and has published the Royal Collection of Piobaireachd as well as a notable work defining the ancient art, etc.

Recently the friends and pupils of Pipe-Major Grant presented him and Mrs. Grant with a silver tea service and silver presentation cup.
