Encouraging Young Bagpipe Players

Sir,–I observed that the Committee of the Cowal Gathering, who are leaving no stone unturned to promote the success of the piping contests, has started a competition for boys of 18 years of age and under.
This is a step in the right direction, and should be greatly appreciated by young players. A number of promising pipers have been trained by such able exponents of piping as J. MacKenzie, Oban; Wm. Gray, Glasgow; John MacColl, late of Oban, now of Glasgow; Wm. Ross, Edinburgh; and others. Ross has been doing good work, I understand, in Islay and Mull.
I should like the Committees of Highland Gatherings to follow the example of the Cowal Committee, and provide competitions for boys. This would do a great deal to encourage young players to learn piobaireachd . –I am, etc.,
