OT: 10 August 1929 – A. MacPherson [“Problems of Piping”] (2nd letter)

The Oban Times, 10 August, 1929

[Problems of Piping]

Inveran Hotel, Invershin, Sutherland, 1 August, 1929

Sir,–I have read Pipe-Major Gray’s letter in your issue of 27 July, and to me it is somewhat disappointing, for I think Mr. Seton Gordon’s suggestion is very sound. Not only for the sake of readers of the “Oban Times” at home, but for those of the Dominions, it would be put on record the name of the pipers playing the redundant A in Toarluadh and Crunluadh.

There is no doubt about Mr. Seton Gordon being quite able to say that so and so played so and so, but that would not, even for Mr. Seton Gordon’s able pen and knowledge, have the same effect as if the player himself put it on record.

I hope that Mr. Gray, whose testimony will, I am sure, be regarded as a value, will see the matter in this light, and that he and the others will come forward and settle once and for all a very important question.–I am, etc.,

A. MacPherson
